Mauritius Red-Tailed Tropic BirdRed-Tailed Tropic Bird (Phaeton lepturus) breeds on offshore islets, and in much lower numbers on mainland Mauritius. Round Island has one of the most important breeding populations of the "Paille en queue a brins rouges" in the Indian Ocean. It is readily recognised by its red bill and two red feathers making up the tail. It is believed that they use the latter as rudder.
Mauritius Javan DeerJavan Deer (Cervus timorensis rusa) was introduced by the Dutch in the early C17th, along with sugar cane. The Dutch wanted to ensure that a reliable meat source was available during their transit on Mauritius. Venison is highly prized and is offered in all restaurants.
Mauritius Mauritius KestrelMauritius Kestrel (Falco punctatus), is the last surviving raptor on Mauritius. Common until the 1940's, this bird of prey declined following the misuse of organochlorides, use to control the vector of malaria, the Anopheles mosquito. It reached it lowest point in 1972, when only 4 birds, including a single female, survived. Thanks to intensive and timely conservation measures, this Mauritian endemic bird has been fully restored, and is presently estimated at over 800 birds.

Mauritius Aldabran Giant land tortoisesAldabran Giant land tortoises (geochelone gigantea) are bred at La Vanille Crocodile Park, in the South. These tortoises can live for 150 years, growing to over 200 kgs. They were brought to Mauritius following Charles Darwin's reccomendation to Queen Victoria, in view to create a safety population for these unique tortoises, should they become extinct on Aldabra (Seychelles). The five tortoise species endemic to the Mascarenes have gone extinct due to human and introduced mammalian predation.
Mauritius Crab Eating Long-tailed macaqueThe Crab Eating Long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis, "Zaco") is bred at La Vanille Crocodile Park. It is an early introduction attributed to the Dutch or perhaps, the Portuguese. Its native range covers Java and Indonesia. It is common in native and secondary forests, where it is a pest to both native fauna and flora.
